The camera may not lie, but doctored
photos do according to new research into digitally altered photos and
how they influence our memories and attitudes toward public events.

When presented with digitally altered images depicting the 1989
Tiananmen Square protest in Beijing and a 2003 anti-war protest in
Rome, participants in a new study by American and Italian researchers
recalled the events as being bigger and more violent than they really
were, suggesting that viewing doctored photographs might affect
people’s memories of past public events.

The study was designed by UC Irvine psychologist Elizabeth Loftus and
conducted by University of Padua researchers Franca Agnoli and Dario
Sacchi.

Internet photo hoaxes are well known, but reputable media outlets such
as the LA Times and USA Today recently published digitally altered
photos, and subsequently issued retractions and apologies. When media
use digitally doctored photographs, they may ultimately change the way
we recall history, Loftus said.

“It shows the power of anyone to tamper with people’s recollection, and
it gives the media another reason to regulate such doctoring, besides
ethical reasons,” Loftus said.

In the study, 299 participants aged 19-84 viewed either original or
digitally altered images depicting two events – the 1989 Tiananmen
Square protest and a 2003 anti-war protest in Rome – and then answered
questions about the events, including the number of people they thought
had been involved, the response of law enforcement authorities and the
level of violence.

Researchers doctored the Beijing photo to show large crowds standing in
the sidelines while a lone protester stood before a row of advancing
Chinese military tanks, and the Rome protest photo was altered to show
riot police and a menacing, masked protester among a crowd of
demonstrators.

“It’s potentially a form of human engineering that could be applied to
us against our knowledge and against our wishes and we ought to be
vigilant about it,” Loftus said. “With the addition of a few little
upsetting and arousing elements in the Rome protest photo, people
remembered this peaceful protest as being more violent than it was, and
as a society we have to figure how we can regulate this.”

Viewing the digitally altered images affected the way participants
remembered the events, as well as their attitudes toward protests.
Those who viewed the doctored photograph of the Rome protest recalled
the demonstration as violent and negative, and also recalled more
physical confrontation and property damage. Participants who viewed the
doctored photos said they were less inclined to participate in future
protests, according to the study.

"Any media that employ digitally doctored photographs will have a
stronger effect than merely influencing our opinion -- by tampering
with our malleable memory, they may ultimately change the way we recall
history," says lead author Dario Sacchi.

This research was published in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology.

This is a movie which is very close to my heart.
In 1981, Chris Gardner was a struggling salesman in little needed medical bone density scanners while his wife toiled in double shifts to support the family including their young son, Christopher. In the face of this difficult life, Chris has the desperate inspiration to try for a stockbroker internship where one in twenty has a chance of a lucrative full time career. Even when his wife leaves him because of this choice, Chris clings to this dream with his son even when the odds become more daunting by the day. Together, father and son struggle through homelessness, jail time, tax seizure and the overall punishing despair in a quest that would make Gardner a respected millionaire.
This movie Teaches us life is a place where good and bad days are part and partial of our life.
Those who turn there bad days into good one are the ones who are called winner.So dont get scared in your odd ,face it with a vision of winning the battle.
The role of Will Smith Is inspirational .I personally like the acting of Steve Conard.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which can be avoided by knowing about its cause..

Perhaps this is the only cancer who's cause we know i.e Mesothelioma can be avoided.

Mesothelima is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the Mesothellioma , a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura(outer lining of the
lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoniums(the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericadium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement products. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking.

Signs and symptoms

It may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of peritonial mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites(a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anamia, and If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions.

Mesothelioma that affects the pleura can cause these signs and symptoms:

chest wall pain
pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung
shortness of breath
fatigue or anemia
wheezing, hoarseness, or cough
blood in the cough

In severe cases, the person may have many tumor masses. The individual may develop a pneumothorax or collapse of the lung . The disease may metasize, or spread, to other parts of the body.

Tumors that affect the abdominal cavity often do not cause symptoms until they are at a late stage. Symptoms include:

abdominal pain
ascites, or an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen
a mass in the abdomen
problems with bowel function
weight loss

In severe cases of the disease, the following signs and symptoms may be present:

blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis
disseminated intravascular coagulation a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs
jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes and skin
low blood sugar level
pleural effusion
pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs
severe ascites

A mesothelioma does not usually spread to the bone, brain, or adrenal glands. Pleural tumors are usually found only on one side of the lungs.

Scientists endeavor to create more "lifelike" digital people.

For centuries, humans have been trying to beat mortality through
technology, employing such fanciful (if chilling) methods as cryonics,
or the freezing of cadavers in the hope that science might one day
stumble upon a cure for all ills. Now, the National Science Foundation
has awarded a half-million- dollar grant to the universities of Central
Florida at Orlando and Illinois at Chicago to explore how researchers
might use artificial intelligence, archiving, and computer imaging to
create convincing, digital versions of real people, a possible first
step toward virtual immortality.

"The goal is to combine artificial intelligence with the latest
advanced graphics and video game-type technology to enable us to create
historical archives of people beyond what can be achieved using
traditional technologies such as text, audio, and video footage," says
Jason Leigh of the University of Chicago's Electronic Visualization
Laboratory.

Leigh's lab will attempt to store and then digitize the appearance,
mannerisms, voice, and (some of) the knowledge of a senior program
manager from the National Science Foundation who is known for his
institutional savvy. The researchers hope to then assemble the data
into a "virtual person" or avatar that will be able to respond to
questions and behave in a manner representative of the test subject.

"The technology we are developing isn't going to magically map memories
and personalities, " says Leigh. "There is a lot of work to be done. But
one can envisiongiven sufficient computing power and informationhat
one can produce highly realistic characters."

A simpler form of this technology already pervades online environments
like the popular game Second Life, says Leigh. One potential use might
be to enhance the experience of such games, enabling players to archive
their characters' experiences in the game environment, and, of course,
to populate virtual worlds with characters who are more rich,
interesting, and lifelike.

Stringing together the diverse technologies of live computer animation
with artificial intelligence, speech recognition, speech synthesis, and
facial expression recognition will be the biggest challenge of the
project. Leigh doubts that the team will be able to create a totally
credible and naturalistic avatar within the project's three-year time
frame, but he is optimistic that the work will stimulate interest in
the field.

The project seeks to not only further the research of scientists
tinkering in virtual worlds, but also be of use to a public trying to
make its way in a world increasingly dominated by computers.

It goes beyond just creating technology for archiving people," says
Leigh. "It encourages people to think about different ways in which
they can communicate and interact with computers. For example, right
now many computers have built-in web-cams. Most of them are turned off
unless [they are being used] for videoconferencing. But imagine if the
camera were active all the time and the computer was watching and
listening to you as you work, just like an assistant or a secretary. It
could use that information to provide you with assistance if it sees
that you are frustrated. Human-to-human communication has evolved and
matured over several millennia, but humans have really only learned to
communicate with computers [in] the last 50 years."

While the technologies, as well as the project itself, are still in
their infancy, Leigh is hopeful that the research may one day lead to
entirely new ways of thinking about memory, history, and even
immortality. "In our efforts to capture the past by digitizing
historical artifacts, using some of the most advanced imaging
technology available today, we've forgotten to turn that imaging
technology 'inwards' and try and capture the original creators of those
historical artifacts," he says.

In the future, artificial intelligence, voice synthesis, and computer
graphics may allow us to preserve much more of the departed than
present technology allows and in so doing, infuse history, and memory,
with new life.

JUST 3 WORDS

There are many things that you can do to strengthen your
relationships. Often the most effective thing you can do involves saying just three words. When spoken sincerely, these statements often have the power to
develop new friendships, deepen old ones and even bring healing to relationships
that have soured.

The following three-word phrases can be tools to help develop every
relationship.
1. Let me help
Good friends see a need and then try to fill it. When they see a
hurt they do what they can to heal it. Without being asked, they jump in and help out.

2. I understand you.
People become closer and enjoy each other more when the other person accepts and understands them. Letting your spouse know - in so many little ways – that you understand them, is one of the most powerful tools for healing your relationship. And this can apply to any relationship.

3. I respect you
Respect is another way of showing love. Respect demonstrates that
another person is a true equal. If you talk to your children as if they
were adults you will strengthen the bonds and become closer friends. This applies to all interpersonal relationships.

4. I miss you.
Perhaps more marriages could be saved and strengthened if couples
simply and sincerely said to each other "I miss you." This powerful
affirmation tells partners they are wanted, needed, desired and loved. Consider how important you would feel, if you received an unexpected phone call from your spouse in the middle of your workday, just to say "I miss you."

5. Maybe you're right.
This phrase is very effective in diffusing an argument. The
implication when you say "maybe you're right" is the humility of admitting, "maybe I'm wrong". Let's face it. When you have an argument with someone, all you normally do is solidify the other person's point of view. They, or you, will not likely change their position and you run the risk of seriously damaging the relationship between you. Saying "maybe you're right" can open the door to explore the subject more. You may then have the opportunity to express your view in a way that is understandable to the other person.

6. Please forgive me
Many broken relationships could be restored and healed if people
would admit their mistakes and ask for forgiveness. All of us are
vulnerable to faults, foibles and failures. A man should never be ashamed to own up that he has been in the wrong, which is saying, in other words, that he is wiser today than he was yesterday.

9. I'll be there
If you have ever had to call a friend in the middle of the night, to
take a sick child to hospital, or when your car has broken down some miles from home, you will know how good it feels to hear the phrase "I'll be there."
Being there for another person is the greatest gift we can give.
